Playing for recovery capital

Inspirado is a board game developed with and for people recovering from drug and alcohol misuse to support treatment and recovery. I have not been able to review it since it is currently in the funding stage – you can find its kickstarter page here.

About the game

Inspirado is the Spanish translation for ‘Inspired’. It is a board game that models the pathway of people recovering from substance misuse.

Inspirado has proven to be a highly interactive brief intervention tool for behaviour change which aims to support players:

  • Gain an understanding of recovery and behaviour change
  • Recognise the various elements that influence behaviour change
  • Systematically build motivation
  • Share experiences when players identify with any of the antecedent cards or their response to a particular incident and
  • Reinforce choice

Inspirado is fundamentally built on B.F. Skinner’s ABC model of operant conditioning. Its theoretical foundation also comprises of a combination of Prochaska and DiClemente cycle of change; Behavioural Functional Analysis (CBT); and B.J. Fogg Behaviour Change Model.

The game seeks to engage players in thinking about experiencing all the main features of a recovery journey including:

  • Dealing with negative events
  • Building recovery capital
  • Coping with relapse
  • Reacting to triggers
  • Sharing inspirational quotes and affirmations.

In addition to a traditional numbered die, the game is also played with an emoji dice to reflect the strong emotions in any recovery journey. Players start the game as caterpillars and morph through the events they experience.

It’s certainly an intriguing idea – I’d be interested in readers’ views and experiences of other innovative recovery resources.

Drug treatment helps recovery but is not enough on its own

Measuring drug recovery is problematic, to say the least. Recovery from drug dependence is, like desistance from crime, rarely a linear process and typically includes lapse and relapse over many years. Different people choose different recovery goals: some people remain abstinent from all substances for life; others continue to use occasionally; or replace drug dependence with a reliance on alcohol.
