The US murder rate compared to other countries

According to data published by Nate Silver over on FiveThirtyEight, black Americans are murdered at 12 times the rate of people in other developed countries. 5.2 out of every 100,000 Americans was a murder victim between 2010 and 2012.

The chart shows average homicide deaths per 100,000 of the population for the three year period 2010-2012.

As you can see the murder rate in the UK is the same as that in France and Ireland but substantially higher than that in Germany and Spain.

The main standout fact is that Black US citizens are almost 8 times more likely to be murdered than their white fellow citizens.
