58 countries in the world have the death penalty
A recent chilling report on the Talking Drugs website which found that over half the 58 countries in the world that still have the death penalty have made it applicable to people who have committed non–violent drug crimes.
Last year, at least seven countries carried out executions of people convicted of drug-related offences ranging from drug trafficking, manufacturing and growing drugs – and even simple possession.
The report quotes 2012 information from Harm Reduction International which estimates that actual executions took place in 12 – 14 countries over the previous five years for drug-related offences.

It is startling that Iran has so many executions. I just combed through several UN and CIA documents in researching a post on methamphetamine and found that Iran is among the top 4 countries in the world in which methamphetamine is seized. It surprised me but is congruent with the finding that large numbers of people in Iran are executed as indicated by this map. A sad state of affairs.
